The 2021 USM Broadcast Boot Camp

The School of Communication at the University of Southern Mississippi partnered with the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association and the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters to offer a first-of-its kind, weeklong workshop for state high school students. The goal was to expose students to the skills needed for potential career options in the media and broadcasting fields. Media and communication industries face a growing expertise shortage even as the explosion of social media and other digital platforms demand ever more sophisticated content. The broadcasting industry, in particular, needs technology and marketing expertise to serve broad audiences across multiple platforms.

These Mississippi organizations worked to help bridge this divide by targeting high school students with the weeklong summer workshop in Hattiesburg. The five-day camp, offered without charge to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, put the students to work creating digital and television news and information, as well as introductions to the various career options in all aspects of broadcasting and production.
